Bakker graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa State University in Mathematics and a Masters of Arts in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Iowa.
He also obtained a Minor in Psychology, a Secondary Teaching Certification, and a Coaching Endorsement during his time at Iowa State.

Coach Bakker played football at Iowa State University, lettering for two years under Coach Dan McCarney in 2003 and 2004. His coaching career began as an assistant at Valley High School before becoming the head coach at Pleasantville High School in 2012. At Pleasantville, he led the team to three playoff appearances and a record of 29-20. Bakker then served as head coach at Clear Creek Amana High School for four seasons with a record of 20-16 before taking over at Waukee High School in 2021. In the five seasons since taking over a Waukee program that split due to the opening of a second high school, Bakker has led the team to three playoff appearances and a record of 24-25.

Bakker’s teams have an overall record of 73-61 and have qualified for the playoffs nine times.
He has coached several players that have earned all-state honors and many more that have continued their playing careers at the collegiate level.

A native of Dike, Iowa, Bakker and his wife, Hilary, have four children: Beckett (18), Binley (15), Bruer (12), and Briggs (9).
